John Peyton Cooke

Interestingly, this book is subtitled "a murder novel." I thought it was quite an interesting read, though I don't think I sympathized enough with Jesse, the main character. (It's hard to call anyone a hero in this book.) The book begins with Jesse, as a teenaged drifter, committing murder. Fast forward a while, and he has become a more solid citizen, and applies to become a cop. Of course you know that the murder is going to come back to haunt him... Not a traditional mystery, more like a noir novel, but a good read.
