Sharon's Tips

Paws and Reflect has been getting some great press. Victor Banis's essay was excepted in the December 19, 2006 issue of the Advocate, and then in the January 16, 2007 issue we were named one of the top 10 books for 2006!

Here are some of the articles and reviews.

  • An article in US1, a newspaper in Princeton, NJ

  • A review by Kilian Meloy for the Edge newspapers in Boston, Providence, New York, Philadelphia and Provincetown

  • A review at GayMonkey.com

  • A review our contributor, Hal Campbell, wrote for We The People, a North Bay GLBT paper.

  • The website AfterElton.com ran a nice review of Paws.

  • Richard Labonte, editor of Books to Watch Out For, writes about Paws in his column Book Marks.

  • Marketing whiz Kate Allan reviewed the Paws cover at her blog.

  • While Sharon was at the AKC Eukanuba dog show in Long Beach, CA, she was interviewed by the Advocate.

  • Express Gay News, a local gay newspaper in Ft. Lauderdale, ran a nice interview with me, and a good picture of me and Sam.

  • Steve Rothaus, who reports on gay & lesbian issues for the Miami Herald, wrote a terrific interview for the Herald just before my first reading.

  • Sharon was interviewed by the Princeton Packet.

  • A review in Time Out Chicago
  • In his April 29, 2007 column for Willamette Week Online, columnist Byron Beck wrote "On being gay: I'm an old-fashioned queer fart: My pets are my "kids." Kids that don't live long and can't take care of themselves. I'm not saying straight people don't go through the same ordeal. They do. But for a gay softy like me—whose youth was spent picking out useless party clothes and is now spent picking up dog shit—I'm completely shaken to my core when one of those "kids" die, like my mama cat, Peg, did in January. To read about the special bond between dogs and queer owners, check out Paws and Reflect by Neil Plakcy and Sharon Sakson (Alyson Books, 304 pages, $24.95), a new tome devoted to this timeless subject.
  • This mention appeared on the Windy City Times "Media Watch" website: "Charles Busch, drag actor and playwright, has a charming essay in The New York Times ( April 27 ) adapted from the book Paws and Reflect: Exploring the Bond Between Gay Men and Their Dogs by Neil Plakcy and Sharon Sakson. Busch tells of being a sad motherless little boy whom a strange family coalesced around: an enormous white shepard dog, Wolfie, and an African-American cleaning woman, Beulah. Beulah taught the little boy ( at his request ) to set and style her wig,s and all three watched old movies on TV. Later Busch, in drag and wigs, would perform—imitating the movie divas while Beulah and Wolfie watched him attentively. Sounds like a play to me."
